Methenamine can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation, rash, and, rarely, bladder irritation or painful urination. Its effectiveness depends on maintaining an acidic urine pH, which may be difficult for some patients. Additionally, it is not suitable for treating upper urinary tract infections or in patients with renal insufficiency.
