Rifaximin is an antibiotic that works mainly in the intestines to stop the growth of certain bacteria. It is used to treat conditions like traveler’s diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in people with liver disease. Because it is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, its effects are mostly limited to the gut.
