Xifaxan (rifaximin) is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria in the gut. It is commonly used to treat traveler’s diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in people with liver disease. Xifaxan stays mostly in the intestines and has minimal effects on the rest of the body.
